ASER report brings good news — classrooms have recovered post Covid

The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2024 indicates a significant recovery in classroom attendance and learning outcomes in India following the COVID-19 pandemic. The survey, conducted by the Pratham Foundation, highlights several key findings:

High Enrollment Rates: Enrollment for children aged 6-14 stands at 98%, with private school enrollment returning to pre-pandemic levels.

Improved Learning Outcomes: There has been a notable increase in reading and arithmetic skills among students in government schools. For instance, the percentage of Class III students in government schools able to read a Class II level text has risen from 16.3% in 2022 to 23.4% in 2024.

Enhanced Arithmetic Abilities: The ability of Class III students to perform subtraction has improved, with a substantial increase observed between 2022 and 2024.

These improvements are attributed to the National Education Policy's focus on foundational literacy and numeracy, as well as the consistent return of students to regular schooling. However, challenges remain, such as persistent learning gaps, with 76.6% of Class III students still unable to read a Class II level text, indicating the need for continued efforts to address educational disparities.

Overall, the ASER 2024 report reflects a positive trend in India's educational recovery post-pandemic, underscoring the importance of sustained initiatives to further enhance learning

 outcomes.
