Deepseek ai

DeepSeek is a Chinese artificial intelligence company, established in 2023 and headquartered in Hangzhou, Zhejiang. Founded by Liang Wenfeng, it specializes in developing open-source large language models (LLMs).

In January 2025, DeepSeek released its AI Assistant app, based on the DeepSeek-R1 model, for iOS and Android platforms. By January 27, 2025, this app had surpassed ChatGPT as the most-downloaded free app on the iOS App Store in the United States. The DeepSeek-R1 model delivers performance comparable to other leading LLMs, such as OpenAI's GPT-4, but was developed at a significantly lower cost—approximately $6 million compared to GPT-4's $100 million—and requires only a tenth of the computing power.

DeepSeek's rapid ascent has had notable impacts on the tech industry. Following the app's success, Nvidia's stock price experienced a significant decline, reflecting concerns about the competitive pressure DeepSeek's efficient models may place on established AI and hardware companies.

The company's approach to open-source AI development has been lauded for its transparency and cost-effectiveness. However, it has also raised concerns regarding data privacy and potential censorship, given its Chinese origins. Experts caution about the possibility of the Chinese government utilizing such AI systems for surveillance or disinformation campaigns.

DeepSeek's emergence underscores the dynamic and competitive nature of the global AI landscape, highlighting the potential for innovative approaches to disrupt established p

layers.
