Delhi court to pronounce verdict against ex-Cong MP Sajjan Kumar in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case on Feb 7

A Delhi court is scheduled to pronounce its verdict on February 7, 2025, regarding former Congress Member of Parliament Sajjan Kumar's involvement in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. This follows a delay in November 2024, when the court deferred the verdict to December 16, 2024, citing the need for clarifications.

In December 2018, the Delhi High Court convicted Kumar and sentenced him to life imprisonment for his role in the riots, specifically for the murder of five members of a Sikh family in Raj Nagar, Delhi. The court described the mass killings of Sikhs between November 1 and 4, 1984, as "crimes against humanity," highlighting the targeting of minorities and the involvement of political actors and law enforcement agencies.

Kumar's conviction was challenged, and the case was transferred to a special CBI court for further proceedings. The upcoming verdict will address the charges related to the killing of Jaswant Singh and his son, Tarundeep Singh, in Saraswati Vihar on November 1, 1984. The prosecution alleges that Kumar led the mob that attacked the Sikh family, resulting in their deaths.

The 1984 anti-Sikh riots remain a significant and sensitive chapter in India's history, with ongoing legal proceedings aimed at delivering justice to the victims and their fami

lies.
