A recent incident at Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT) in West Bengal has garnered significant attention. A viral video depicts a senior female professor and a first-year student performing Hindu wedding rituals in a classroom setting. The footage shows the professor, dressed in bridal attire, and the student exchanging garlands and applying sindoor (vermilion), traditional customs in Hindu marriages.
The video's circulation has sparked widespread controversy, leading the university administration to initiate a three-member inquiry panel to investigate the matter. Both the professor and the student have been advised to refrain from attending classes until the investigation concludes.
In her defense, the professor stated that the act was part of a psychodrama demonstration intended for educational purposes within her class. She emphasized that there was no misconduct or immoral intent behind the enactment and that the videos were meant solely for internal documentation. She expressed concern that the footage was leaked with the intent to tarnish the reputation of the Psychology Department.
MAKAUT's officiating vice-chancellor, Tapas Chakraborty, acknowledged the professor's explanation but noted that, given the public reaction, the university had to take action. He stated, "She has clarified that it was an academic project and not meant for external circulation. However, since the videos have gone viral and created a controversy, we have asked her to proceed on leave until the committee submits its report."
The university community and the public await the findings of the inquiry committee to determine the appropriate course of
action.
