World’s largest banyan tree is in India and it’s called a Living Coffin

The world’s largest banyan tree, known as the Thimmamma Marrimanu, is located in Andhra Pradesh, India. Spanning over 5 acres, it holds the Guinness World Record as the largest tree canopy in the world. The tree is believed to be more than 550 years old and is considered sacred by locals.

The reference to it being called a "Living Coffin" comes from the unique cultural and spiritual beliefs tied to banyan trees in India. The tree's dense, sprawling canopy creates an almost enclosed, coffin-like environment beneath its branches, symbolizing the cycle of life and death. Additionally, banyan trees are often associated with ancestors and spirits in Indian mythology, reinforcing this eerie yet spiritual moniker.
