At least 773 killed in DR Congo as fighting with M23 rebels escalates: Report

Recent reports indicate that escalating clashes between the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) military and M23 rebels have resulted in significant casualties. As of January 30, Goma's hospital morgues held 773 bodies, with 2,880 individuals reported injured over a four-day period.

The M23, a Tutsi-led rebel group, briefly seized Goma, prompting a massive humanitarian crisis as hundreds of thousands fled the violence. Humanitarian organizations are facing challenges in providing aid due to ongoing hostilities and looting. Despite M23's claims of restoring order, severe shortages of medical supplies and widespread human rights violations have been reported.

In response to the worsening situation, the DRC's Foreign Minister, Therese Kayikwamba Wagner, has called on soccer clubs Arsenal, Bayern Munich, and Paris St Germain to terminate their "Visit Rwanda" sponsorships. This request follows a worsening humanitarian crisis linked to Rwanda-backed M23 rebel attacks in Goma, an area rich in valuable minerals. The United Nations has reported severe human rights violations in this conflict, including summary executions and sexual violence.

The situation remains volatile, with international calls for a ceasefire and de-escalation of the conflict. The DRC military, supported by Burundi's troops, has managed to reclaim some territories, but fighting persists in other ar

eas.
