In a recent exposé, veteran trade analyst Komal Nahta has raised serious allegations against the makers of "Sky Force," starring Akshay Kumar and debutant Veer Pahariya, accusing them of employing deceptive practices to inflate box office collections. Nahta's revelations have ignited a debate on the integrity of box office reporting in Bollywood.
Allegations of Inflated Collections
Nahta highlighted that "Sky Force" offered tickets priced at ₹300 on booking platforms like BookMyShow, with a ₹250 refund per ticket, effectively reducing the price to ₹50 for viewers. However, the reported collections were based on the original ₹300 price. He explained, "If one lakh tickets were booked at ₹300 each, the declared revenue would be ₹3 crore. But since ₹250 per ticket was refunded, only ₹50 lakh reached theatre owners. The remaining ₹2.5 crore remains unaccounted for, yet the official figures still reflect ₹3 crore."
Block Booking Tactics
Nahta also accused the producers of engaging in block booking, where unsold tickets are purchased in bulk to create an illusion of a housefull show. He stated, "If a theatre with 300 seats sold 40 tickets, the producers purchased the remaining 260 seats, prompting a 'Housefull' board. Audiences arriving for screenings, however, found near-empty halls." This strategy allegedly allowed producers to report inflated collections, claiming ₹80 crore when actual earnings were closer to ₹40–50 crore.
Industry-Wide Concern
Nahta emphasized that "Sky Force" isn't the sole offender, alleging similar practices in other recent releases. He hinted at a current Hindi film employing the same strategy, though he refrained from explicitly naming it.
Implications for Bollywood
These revelations have sparked discussions about the ethics of box office reporting and the potential long-term impact on the industry's credibility. While some argue that such tactics create a perception of high demand, others believe they mislead investors and audiences, ultimately harming the industry's reputation.
As the debate continues, stakeholders in Bollywood are called upon to uphold transparency and integrity in box office reporting to maintain audience trust and ensure the industry's su
stainable growth.
