Keith Siegel: Emotional family of American hostage released by Hamas says ‘we can breathe’

Keith Siegel, an Israeli-American citizen from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was released from Hamas captivity on February 1, 2025, marking the first time an American hostage has been freed under the current ceasefire agreement.

His release was part of a broader exchange, with Hamas freeing three hostages—Siegel, Ofer Kalderon, and Yarden Bibas—in return for Israel releasing 183 Palestinian prisoners.

Siegel's family expressed profound relief and joy upon his return. His wife, Aviva, stated, "I am grateful beyond words that Keith is back. But our fight is not over. Too many are still there, living in the darkness, suffering the unimaginable. We must bring them all home."

The Siegel family's ordeal began on October 7, 2023, when Keith and his family were kidnapped by Hamas from the Nir Oz kibbutz. While Keith has been released, his son remains unaccounted for, and his wife and daughter were previously freed in November 2023.

The emotional reunion highlights the ongoing challenges and the enduring hope of families affected by the co
