Mercedes raced by Moss and Fangio sells for record £42.75m

A 1955 Mercedes-Benz W196 R "Streamliner," driven by racing legends Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio, has set a new record by selling for €51.155 million (approximately £42.75 million) at an auction held on February 1, 2025, in Stuttgart, Germany.

This sale surpasses the previous record for a Formula 1 car, which was £19 million for a non-streamliner W196 in 2013.

The proceeds from this auction will support the restoration and acquisition efforts of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum, which had been the car's custodian since 1965.

The Mercedes W196 R "Streamliner" is renowned for its advanced engineering and aerodynamic design, contributing to its dominance in 1950s motorsport.

This record-breaking sale underscores the enduring legacy and value of classic racing cars in the automotive

 world.
