Trump says Canada would have no tariffs as 51st state, as observers brace for trade war

President Donald Trump has announced the imposition of a 25% tariff on imports from Canada, Mexico, and China, citing concerns over illegal immigration and drug trafficking. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has declared retaliatory tariffs of 25% on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods.

Amid these escalating tensions, President Trump reiterated his suggestion that Canada could avoid these tariffs by becoming the 51st U.S. state. He stated that the U.S. pays "hundreds of billions of dollars to subsidize Canada" and that without this support, Canada would struggle to remain viable. He added that as a U.S. state, Canada would benefit from "much lower taxes, and far better military protection."

Canadian political leaders have strongly rejected this proposal. Chrystia Freeland, a leading candidate to succeed Prime Minister Trudeau, condemned the tariffs as an "act of economic warfare" and emphasized Canada's commitment to sovereignty. She stated that while Canada does not seek conflict, it will stand firm and respond with its own tariffs.

Observers are expressing concern that these developments could lead to a broader trade war, potentially increasing inflation and hindering economic growth. Economists warn that the tariffs may harm the U.S. economy by raising consumer prices and straining relationships with key trading partn
