Arvind Kejriwal to be booked? Haryana plans action over ‘Yamuna poisoned’ claim

The Haryana government has announced plans to file a First Information Report (FIR) against Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal under Sections 2(d) and 54 of the Disaster Management Act. This action is in response to Kejriwal's recent allegations that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Haryana government has contaminated the Yamuna River with poison, posing a threat to Delhi residents.

Haryana's Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, Vipul Goel, criticized Kejriwal's statements, asserting that they were irresponsible and intended to incite public fear. Goel emphasized that both Delhi and Haryana officials, including cabinet ministers and the Prime Minister, consume the same water, dismissing the poisoning claims as baseless.

In a symbolic gesture to refute the allegations, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini visited the banks of the Yamuna River in Delhi's Palla Village and drank its water. He stated that water samples had been tested and no toxins were found, accusing Kejriwal of spreading false information for political gain.

The Election Commission has also intervened, requesting that Kejriwal provide evidence to substantiate his claims by January 29, 2025. This move follows complaints from BJP and Congress leaders concerning the veracity of his statements.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the controversy during a rally in Delhi's Kartar Nagar, condemning Kejriwal's remarks as malicious and unfounded. He questioned the logic behind the allegations, highlighting the interconnectedness of the populations in Delhi and Haryana and implying that such actions would be self-destructive.

This dispute arises amid heightened political tensions as Delhi approaches its assembly elections on February

 5, 2025.
