Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has claimed a landslide victory in the recent presidential election, securing 86.8% of the vote. However, Western governments and opposition figures have labeled the election a "sham," citing widespread repression, the banning of independent media, and the imprisonment or exile of opposition leaders.
Exiled opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has called for increased Western sanctions against those involved in repressing opponents and aiding Russia's war in Ukraine.
In response to the election, Canada has announced sanctions against Belarus, targeting 10 individuals and 12 entities, in condemnation of the fraudulent election and human rights abuses.
The European Union has also rejected the election results, highlighting a lack of free and fair conditions.
Despite international condemnation, Lukashenko has expressed no regrets about allowing Russia to use Belarus as a launchpad for invading Ukraine.
The political climate in Belarus remains tense, with approximately 1,250 political prisoners still d
etained.
