Fierce fighting has erupted in Goma, the largest city in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), as rebel forces, notably the M23 group, clash with the Congolese army. The M23 rebels have reportedly taken control
of Goma, leading to widespread civilian displacement and raising concerns about a potential regional conflict.
The M23 group, primarily composed of Congolese Tutsi, claims to defend their community against the Congolese military. United Nations experts have noted support from Rwanda, including the deployment of Rwandan troops alongside M23 rebels.
The escalating violence has resulted in significant civilian casualties and has disrupted humanitarian efforts in the region. The United Nations Security Council has expressed concerns about the potential for a broader war, with the U.S., France, and Britain condemning Rwanda's alleged support for the rebels. Rwanda denies these accusations, blaming the Congolese government for the crisis.
In response to the escalating violence, the United Nations has relocated staff from Goma, and the World Food Programme has temporarily halted emergency operations.
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing efforts by international organizations to mediate and provide humanitarian assistance to those affected by the co
nflict.
