French, US, Rwandan embassies attacked in Democratic Republic of Congo amid unrest

On January 28, 2025, protesters in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), attacked the embassies of France, the United States, Rwanda, Belgium, the Netherlands, Uganda, Kenya, and the United Nations. The demonstrators set fire to embassy gates and caused property damage, expressing anger over perceived foreign interference in the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC.

The unrest in Kinshasa coincides with significant developments in eastern DRC, where M23 rebels have seized control of Goma's airport, disrupting major aid routes for hundreds of thousands of displaced people. The offensive represents a severe escalation of a long-standing conflict rooted in the aftermath of the Rwandan genocide and the control over Congo's mineral resources.

The Congolese government and the United Nations have accused Rwandan troops of supporting the M23 rebels, a claim that Rwanda denies, asserting it is protecting itself from Congolese militias. The international community fears the conflict may escalate into a broader regional war.

In response to the attacks on its embassy, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot condemned the violence as "unacceptable" and emphasized that measures are being taken to ensure the safety of French personnel and citizens.

The situation remains volatile, with ongoing protests and military confrontations contributing to a complex and rapidly evolving crisis in the DRC.
