Tap water connections in rural household crossed 150 mn mark: Eco Survey

According to the Economic Survey 2024-25, the number of rural households in India with tap water connections has surpassed 150 million. This achievement is part of the Jal Jeevan Mission, launched in August 2019, which aims to provide safe and adequate drinking water through individual household tap connections to all rural households by 2024. At the inception of the mission, only 17% of rural households had tap water connections. As of February 2024, this figure has risen to approximately 73.93%, with over 142.4 million rural households now having access to tap water.

The mission has faced challenges, including water scarcity in certain areas, contamination issues, and the need for capacity building at the local level. Despite these hurdles, significant progress has been made, with several states and union territories achieving 100% tap water connectivity. The government continues to work towards its goal of ensuring every rural household has access to potable tap water, contributing to improved public health and quality of life in rural India
