Your hormones could be fuelling cancer. Here's what every woman and man needs to know

Hormones play a significant role in regulating various bodily functions, including cell growth and reproduction. However, prolonged exposure to certain hormones can increase the risk of developing specific cancers in both women and men.

In Women:

Breast Cancer: Elevated levels of estrogen and progesterone have been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer. Factors contributing to higher hormone exposure include early onset of menstruation, late menopause, older age at first pregnancy, and never having given birth.

Ovarian and Endometrial Cancers: Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), especially estrogen-only formulations, has been associated with a slight increase in the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancers. The risk is higher with prolonged use and decreases after discontinuation of the therapy.

In Men:

Prostate Cancer: Androgens, particularly testosterone, are essential for normal prostate function but can also promote the growth of prostate cancer cells. Elevated levels or prolonged exposure to these hormones may increase the risk of developing prostate cancer.

General Considerations:

Lifestyle Factors: Obesity can lead to increased hormone levels, such as estrogen, due to the conversion of androgens in adipose tissue. This elevation is linked to a higher risk of hormone-related cancers.

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT): While effective for managing menopausal symptoms, HRT has been associated with a slight increase in the risk of certain cancers, including breast and ovarian cancers. The risk varies depending on the type and duration of HRT used.

Recommendations:

Regular Screenings: Engage in routine cancer screenings appropriate for your age and gender to facilitate early detection.

Lifestyle Modifications: Maintain a healthy weight, adopt a balanced diet, limit alcohol consumption, and avoid smoking to help regulate hormone levels and reduce cancer risk.

Consult Healthcare Providers: Before initiating or continuing HRT or other hormone-based treatments, discuss potential risks and benefits with your healthcare provider.

Understanding the relationship between hormones and cancer can empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and take proac

tive steps to mitigate risks.
