In recent developments, Bangladesh has formally lodged a strong protest with the Indian government over statements made by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been in exile in India since August 2024. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh expressed deep concern regarding Hasina's "false and fabricated" comments, which they claim are instigating instability within Bangladesh. The protest note, delivered to the Acting High Commissioner of India in Dhaka, emphasized that such statements are "hurting the sentiments of the people in Bangladesh" and are considered "a hostile act towards Bangladesh."
The tension escalated following a speech by Hasina on February 5, 2025, delivered via social media from her location in India. In her address, she called upon the people of Bangladesh to organize resistance against the current interim government, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus. This speech coincided with widespread protests in Bangladesh, during which demonstrators vandalized and set fire to the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh and Hasina's father. The residence, located in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area, had been converted into the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum. Protesters, reportedly demanding a ban on the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League, stormed the premises after breaking open the gate, causing widespread destruction.
The Bangladesh Ministry of Foreign Affairs has requested the Indian government to "immediately take appropriate measures, in the spirit of mutual respect and understanding, to stop her from making such false, fabricated, and incendiary statements using social media and other communications while she is in India."
This incident underscores the ongoing political tensions in Bangladesh following the resignation of Sheikh Hasina in August 2024, amid a student-led uprising. The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, has faced challenges in maintaining order and addressing human rights concerns. The situation remains fluid, with both domestic and international implications for Bangladesh's political lands
