As of now, there is no official confirmation that the Union Budget 2025 includes provisions to extend health insurance coverage under the Ayushman Bharat scheme to 1 crore gig workers. However, discussions have been underway to include gig workers earning between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 per month under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (ABPM-JAY). The National Health Authority has been considering this inclusion to provide financial protection to gig workers who often face high out-of-pocket hospitalization costs.
In the absence of a nationwide policy, some state governments have proactively introduced insurance schemes for gig workers. For instance, Karnataka has launched the 'Karnataka State Gig Workers Insurance Scheme,' offering a ₹4 lakh insurance cover, which includes ₹2 lakh for life insurance and ₹2 lakh for accidental insurance. This scheme benefits both full-time and part-time gig workers associated with platforms like Swiggy, Zomato, Amazon, and others.
Similarly, Rajasthan has implemented measures to provide insurance coverage for gig workers, reflecting a growing recognition of the need to protect this segment of the workforce.
While these state-level initiatives are commendable, a comprehensive national policy is awaited to ensure uniform health insurance coverage for gig workers across I
ndia.
