In the lead-up to the Delhi Assembly elections scheduled for May 25, 2024, approximately 5,472 eligible voters, including persons with disabilities and those aged above 85, opted for the home voting facility by submitting Form 12D. This initiative allowed them to cast their votes from the comfort of their homes.
The home voting process commenced on May 16 and continued until May 24, 2024. On the first day, over 1,480 elderly voters and persons with disabilities utilized this facility across all seven parliamentary constituencies in Delhi. West Delhi saw the highest participation, with 406 voters casting their ballots from home.
By May 21, 2024, West Delhi continued to lead in home voting, with a total of 969 elderly voters and 179 persons with disabilities casting their ballots from home. New Delhi constituency reported 909 elderly voters and 70 persons with disabilities utilizing the facility. On May 20 alone, 4,774 voters across various constituencies in Delhi used the home voting option.
Despite the availability of the home voting facility, the overall response was modest. Out of over 1.7 lakh eligible voters in Delhi, less than 6,000 availed themselves of this option. The Election Commission had anticipated higher participation, especially considering the hot weather conditions in late May.
To further support voters, the Election Commission arranged for 8,000 volunteers and 4,000 wheelchairs at polling stations for those who preferred to vote in person. The home voting process was conducted with full security and transparency, ensuring the secrecy of the vote. Polling officials and security personnel visited voters' residences, and the entire process was videographed to maintain integrity.
This initiative reflects the Election Commission's commitment to making the electoral process more accessible and inclusive for all
citizens.
