Serbia's students blockade bridges and hold protest to mark 3 months since deadly canopy collapse

 On Saturday, February 1, 2025, tens of thousands of Serbian students and citizens gathered in Novi Sad to mark three months since the tragic collapse of a concrete canopy at the city's train station, which resulted in 15 fatalities. The incident has become a focal point for widespread anti-corruption protests against the government, with demonstrators alleging that corruption and poor safety oversight in infrastructure projects contributed to the disaster. 


The protesters organized blockades of three bridges over the Danube River in Novi Sad, with two bridges blocked for three hours and the Liberty Bridge for 24 hours. This action is part of a broader movement demanding accountability and transparency from the government. The protests have been largely peaceful, with participants honoring the victims by laying wreaths and observing moments of silence. 


These demonstrations represent one of the most significant challenges to President Aleksandar Vučić's administration in recent years. The public outcry has already led to the resignation of Prime Minister Miloš Vučević, who stepped down amid the escalating protests. Despite this, protesters continue to demand further action, including the publication of documents related to the train station's reconstruction, the arrest of individuals who attacked demonstrators, the withdrawal of charges against detained students, and increased funding for higher education. 


The government's response has included some concessions, but protesters remain steadfast in their demands for justice and systemic change. The situation continues to evolve, with ongoing demonstrations and calls for greater accountability from Serbian authorit
