As of now, there are no reports of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi making a 'band-aid' remark regarding Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman's Union Budget 2025. However, in July 2024, following the presentation of the Union Budget 2024-25, Rahul Gandhi criticized the budget, labeling it the "Kursi Bachao" (Save the Chair) Budget. He accused the government of making hollow promises to appease allies at the expense of other states and benefiting cronies without providing relief to the common Indian. He also alleged that the budget was copied from the Congress party's Lok Sabha election manifesto.
Other Congress leaders echoed these sentiments. Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram noted that the government had adopted proposals from the Congress manifesto, such as the Employment-linked Incentive (ELI) and an Apprenticeship scheme with allowances for apprentices. He expressed a wish that more ideas from the Congress manifesto had been included.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge criticized the budget as a "copycat" effort, distributing half-hearted "rewadis" (freebies) to deceive coalition partners to ensure the survival of the NDA government. He argued that the budget lacked substantial announcements for various sections of society, including youth, farmers, women, and the rural poor, and failed to address critical issues like rising inflation and rural development.
These critiques reflect the opposition's view that the budget was more focused on political appeasement and lacked concrete measures to address the needs of the broader popula
tion.
