Russian airstrike kills 11 in Ukraine, targets gas infrastructure

On February 1, 2025, Russia launched a significant aerial attack on Ukraine, resulting in 11 fatalities and extensive damage to residential and energy infrastructure. In Poltava, a missile strike on a residential building killed seven people and injured 14, including children. Kharkiv experienced a drone attack causing one death and four injuries, while three policemen died in Sumy. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the need for increased air defense support in response to these attacks. The Ukrainian air force reported the launch of 123 drones and over 40 missiles from Russian forces, with air defense units intercepting many of them. The strikes damaged infrastructure across six regions, including Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv, Sumy, and Khmelnytskyi. Russia's Ministry of Defence confirmed attacks on Ukraine's gas infrastructure, continuing a pattern of targeting the country's energy sector since March 2024.
