Shelling at busy Sudanese market 'fills mortuary with bodies

On February 1, 2025, a devastating attack occurred at the Sabrein Market in Omdurman, Sudan, resulting in at least 56 fatalities and 158 injuries. The paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is accused of carrying out the shelling, though they have denied responsibility.

The assault has overwhelmed local medical facilities, with Doctors Without Borders (MSF) reporting that the mortuary is filled with bodies.

This attack is part of a broader conflict that began in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF, leading to approximately 150,000 deaths and the displacement of 11 million people.

The international community has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence and its impact on civilians. The United Nations has called for immediate ceasefires and humanitarian assistance to alleviate the crisis.

The situation remains dire, with ongoing clashes and a severe humanitarian crisis affecting millions in

 Sudan.
