Trump orders airstrikes on Islamic State in Somalia, says Biden wasn't ‘quick enough’

On Saturday, February 1, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he had ordered precision airstrikes targeting Islamic State (IS) operatives in Somalia's Golis Mountains. The operation aimed to eliminate a senior IS attack planner and other militants who posed threats to the United States and its allies. According to initial assessments, the strikes resulted in the deaths of multiple IS operatives without causing civilian casualties. The Somali government welcomed the action, emphasizing that Somalia should not serve as a haven for terrorists.

In his statement, President Trump criticized former President Joe Biden for not acting swiftly enough against IS threats. He emphasized the importance of decisive action to protect U.S. citizens and allies, asserting that the U.S. will aggressively pursue and eliminate those who intend harm.

The Islamic State's presence in Somalia dates back to 2015, originating from a faction of al-Shabab. Despite facing pressures from Somali forces, U.S. airstrikes, and rival groups, IS continues to operate and recruit in the region, particularly in Puntland, engaging in various criminal activities to fund its operation
