Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have intensified their offensive in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), capturing the strategic city of Goma and advancing into surrounding areas. The United Nations reports that these rebels, supported by approximately 4,000 Rwandan troops, have committed severe human rights violations, including summary executions and sexual violence.
In Goma, residents are enduring extreme hardships. The UN reports at least 700 deaths and 2,800 injuries since the takeover began. Access to basic amenities has been disrupted, with water and electricity recently returning in parts of the city. Many residents express desperation over the hopeless situation, with widespread hunger and the danger of stray bullets.
The M23's actions have drawn international condemnation. However, Rwanda's growing influence in Africa and its strategic importance to Western nations have led to a more muted global response compared to previous conflicts. Analysts suggest that Rwanda's economic and military significance has resulted in less stringent international pressure.
The situation remains dire, with ongoing violence and a deteriorating humanitarian crisis affecting countless civilians in the re
gion.
